Michael Coston, 30, of 480 Pender Rd. was charged with two counts of injury to personal property, one count of injury to real prop erty, failure to report an accident, reckless driving to endanger and driving while license revoked. Hertford Police Chief Dale Vanscoy said Coston was placed on a $3,000 secured bond and is cur rently being held in Albemarle District Jail after he turned himself into police for the May 10 accident that demolished portions of the property at 104 N. Edenton Road St. Vanscoy said though police are still unsure why Coston and his unnamed passenger fled the scene that evening, he did say they have found no evi dence drugs or alcohol played a part in the acci dent. “The only thing we can figure is he [Coston] ran because he did not have a drivers license,” Vanscoy said. However, Vanscoy could not comment on why Coston’s license was initial ly revoked. According to Vanscoy, the evening of May 10 Continued on page 8 Dancing for a cause Rucker, Bass lead '05 class ERIN RICKERT This week 92 area high school seniors will move their tassle to the right, declaring them Perquimans County alum ni during the annual gradu ation ceremony at Memorial Stadium Friday evening. When Saturday dawned with sunshine, participants enjoyed fun activ ities to show their support of Relay's purpose: to raise funds for cancer research and patient support services through the American Cancer Society. Perquimans had five teams in Relay. During one of Saturday's events, Growmasters' team members (left to right) Wade Winslow, Bill Newbern and Tommy Harrell show their sportsmanship and commitment to the cause by par ticipating in a hula relay. Both Winslow's and Harrell's wives are cancer survivors. Over $136,000 was raised this year, exceeding the $125,000 goal. The total includes team fund raising, corporate donations and luminary sales. Owner of submerged car seen ERIN RICKERT Authorities are still working to flesh out details that may explain why a 2000 Chevrolet Lumina was found fully submerged near a secluded Snug Harbor boat ramp in Yeopim Creek last weekend. The vehicle’s owner, Stanley Jones Jr. of Edenton, was nowhere .in sight when Perquimans County Sheriff’s deputies puUed the vehicle from the creek, last Saturday, despite efforts by divers from the Perquimans County Water Rescue team to locate Jones. Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley said since the vehicle was found neither Jones nor the Lumina have been reported missing, but Jones has been spotted in both Perquimans and Chowan counties. “Individuals reported seeing Jones last Sunday in Snug Harbor and Hertford, and the following week in Chowan,” Tilley said. According to Tilley, sher iff’s deputies from Chowan County were among those who saw Jones, who eluded capture when they tried to Continued on page 8 SUBMITTED PHOTO Employees at the Hertford Post Office collected more than 1,500 pounds of food during the recent national Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive. The Laverys, who moved to the area eight years ago from Richmond, Va., said Pig-Out on the Green was the first event they ever attended in Hertford when they first moved and they have come back every year since. Despite raining conditions and competition from several other events going on in the area, event coordinators said Pig-Out on the Green was a success with over 450 tickets sold — only about 50 less than last year. Hertford native Keith Rouse and his band provided dinner entertainment. New Hertford shop offers something for everyone ERIN RICKERT Tired of the fast-paced lifestyle Virginia Beach afforded them, Chester Thorne and his wife Barbara decided to make a change. “It just got to be too much,” Barbara said. “We just wanted to go out to someplace quiet and settle down.” So earlier this year the two bought a fixer-upper and moved to Hertford where they were awarded not only their dream for a quieter lifestyle, but were able to open a shop housing what has been their hobby for decades — antiques, col lectibles and new and clas sic video games. Lady & Mr. Goodstuff, their shop at 405 Grubb Street, now open from 10:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Tuesday- Saturday, celebrated its grand opening with a Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce sponsored ribbon cutting Thursday. At the shop, Chester boasts, the couple sells something for just about anybody, from period antique furniture to doUs and art glass. “We have antiques, but we are leaning heavily in carrying something for everyone,” Chester said.
